The spirits of the Goetia are entities that have existed since the dawn of humanity and have never had a physical life (they have never been incarnated). There are 72 spirits, each of which has certain abilities to help humans achieve things on this physical plane.

It is much easier to define what a Daemon does than to say exactly what it is. To that end, there are a few theories, among many, that explain what the Spirits of the Goetia are, what their origins are and how they fulfil our wishes.

Below are some of the definitions given to these entities:

  • INFERNAL SPIRITS

As the name itself suggests, the Infernal Spirits theory assumes that the Daemons are demons from hell who are evoked to fulfil human wishes. The evocation ritual opens a portal linking the earth with the region of hell where the requested daemon is found. This theory is very widespread and treats the Daemons as unique entities that are very dangerous if evoked without due care.

  • PERSONIFIED ENERGIES

This theory holds that the Daemons are energies omnipresent in this world. These energies represent the phenomena of nature, which manifest in personified form through the evocation ritual. The energy that manifests is considered one facet of the existing energy, which explains how the same Daemon can manifest in several places at the same time.

  • MATERIALISATION OF OUR SUBCONSCIOUS

According to this theory, the Daemons are part of our subconscious, and the ritual is a process that connects our subconscious with our conscious mind. In this way, reality can be altered within the limits of what is possible. It is the materialisation of our desires, and it explains why the same evocation can have different effects for different people.
