Lunations - The 13 Moons

Written by Allan Lima.

Although the main celebrations of Wicca are the Sabbats, there is also the Esbats, which are rituals of the full moon. Every 28 days the moon is honored, as a symbol of the Goddess, in its manifestations, as the influence on tides, harvests, etc.

Blood Moon: Being the first Full Moon before Samhain it is associated with the color red and in ancient times marked the period of slaughter of animals and storage of food for the winter season to come. As the first frost is not far away, plants soon disappear from the ground, and meat becomes the main food source during the winter. It is the Moon that celebrates ancestry, fertility, menstrual blood and motherhood.

Dark Moon: It is associated with silver, white and light blue. In this period, if the first signs of frost have not yet begun to fall, they are not far off. The earth begins a time of deep rest under the blankets of winter, gathering strength for new life in the wake of spring. Ideal moon to connect with divine forces.

Oak Moon: It is considered a moon of introspection, associated with the aspect of the Lord of the Oak. Oak, as its symbol, is the wood traditionally burned in the Midwinter bonfires, corresponding to the Christian Christmas season. It is the Moon of restart, transmutation and rebirth.

Moon of the Wolf: Its color is purple, representing the cold waters of the earth that are trapped under a sheet of ice and under frost. Ideal time to carry out group work and joint efforts, as it favors the union of beings and unity.

Moon of the Storm: August/February describes the long waiting motion of the icy waters as the rains fall and the oceans rage. This is a clear sign that the waters will once again flow and spring will return. This Moon is associated with the color blue, the color of the sacred waters dedicated to the Goddess Brighid. It is the Moon that seeks the balance between light and shadow.

Moon of the Winds: September/March is the return of spring with renewed life. It represents the virginal, clean and untouched form of the fields. Appropriately, its color is white. It is the Moon that celebrates the movement of the earth.

Moon of the Seed: Announces the growth that will cover the earth as the seasons advance. The seeds that are resting below the ground begin to germinate at the same time that all life awakens to the warm earth. Its color is light green. Ideal time to plant the new seeds of the future.

Flower Moon: Moon dedicated to the Fertility Goddesses. Pink, the color of love and white, are the colors of the Moon of the Flower. As spring reaches its peak, romance and love become more evident. This is the Moon of awakening consciousness, creativity and sexuality.

Bright Moon: It is the Summer Solstice period. It is the Lovers' Moon, which reflects the visible presence of the Gods, stamped in the bright sun and the green fields. This Moon is considered orange, that is, the color of the summer sun. It is the Moon of unity, love and prosperity.

Moon of Blessing: It is the last Moon before the first harvest, it is celebrated with dances and songs. This is the time when ancient pagans prepared meadows for harvest celebrations. The Moon of Blessing is yellow, the color of mead. Moon of fertility, dreams and fullness.

Harvest Moon: It is the dark green Moon. The green state of the earth is the name given to the Moon that appears at the same time that the plants are harvested. Time to honor the fruits, as the final period of the harvest will come with the first movement of the sickle at the feet of the plantations. It is the Moon of purification, healing and thanksgiving.

Barley Moon: Rises before the Autumn Equinox in March (or in September for the Northern Hemisphere). The grains are harvested. It's the end of the season and the annual harvest cycle. Brown, the color of grains, is the color of the Barley Moon. It is the Moon of wisdom, knowledge, decisions and closing good deals.

Wine Moon: It is the surplus Moon of the year or the 13th Moon. With the change from the lunar calendar to the solar calendar, there was an overlap of a few months. There are sometimes twelve Moons during the solar year and sometimes thirteen. When this “extra” moon rises it usually rises in April or May, usually before the Blood Moon. Its color is purple red, the color of wine and life. This is the Moon of prophecy and sacred inspiration.
